QTDD Video Project
"...a necessary counterpoint to the clichés and condescension
disabled people at times experience... This collection of shorts is thus
antidote and celebration in one, staying away from inspiration-pornography
and stereotypes while fostering a diverse selection of homegrown talent."
– The Skinny, Edinburgh/Glasgow
In January 2013, Sandra Alland received an arts commission to mentor six new queer & trans* deaf & disabled filmmakers, and begin work on a documentary short. Sandra's students premiered new work at macrobert Stirling in February 2013, and have since screened their shorts at media education in Edinburgh; CCA in Glasgow; TSCD in Berlin; and Trans*tastic, centred, Fringe! Festival and Transpose in London.
The QTDD Video Mentorship includes films by Charles Coventry, Alison Smith, Sophie Norman, Robert Malone, Alexander Herbert and Luke Murphy. Funded by LGBT History Month and Creative Scotland. With special thanks to Rosita McKenzie, Ania Urbanowska and Evi Tsiligaridou.
Since the completion of the project, Sandra has continued work on a series of short documentaries. I'm Not Your Inspiration so far includes shorts about Nathan Gale, Alison Smith and Maki Yamazaki. The films have screened widely, including in London at Wotever! Film Festival and Together! Disability Film Festival, and internationally at Entzaubert Festival (Berlin), Anarchopride (Stockholm) and OUTsider Festival (Austin, TX).
A documentary on Edinburgh singer/songwriter Liz is currently in post-production. Please consider donating (click on the Donate button at the top) to help support the creation of more films about queer and trans* deaf and disabled artists in Scotland. We're currently working without a budget, and could really use some support to keep the project going.
